Rishi Sunak to consult ethics adviser over Suella Braverman speeding claims
PM Rishi Sunak will seek advice from his ethics adviser regarding Suella Braverman’s handling of a speeding offence. The Home Secretary sought guidance in 2022 on arranging a private speed awareness course while she was the Attorney General.
A government source has denied any breach of the ministerial code.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has urged the PM to instruct his adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, to investigate whether any rules were violated. Sir Keir believes that it appears inappropriate actions were taken by Braverman and that a thorough investigation is necessary. He added that typically, breaking the ministerial code results in resignation.
While attending the G7 summit in Japan, Rishi Sunak plans to discuss the matter with his ethics adviser upon his return. However, an investigation into a minister cannot proceed until authorised by the Prime Minister.
Braverman is scheduled to appear in the House of Commons for Home Office questions on Monday afternoon. The focus of scrutiny lies not on the speeding offence itself, but on whether she acted appropriately in seeking a personalised awareness course.
