Rayshard Brooks: No charges in police killing
The police killing of Rayshard Brooks, 27 – who was shot about three weeks after the killing of George Floyd, has been ruled ‘justified’ and there will be no charges.
Brooks was killed in the car park of a Georgia fast-food restaurant – a special prosecutor has ruled it was legally justified.
Brooks was shot dead after fighting with two officers who were trying to arrest him.
Civil rights groups said a grand jury should have reviewed the case.
Brooks was detained during a traffic stop, where he had been asleep at the wheel and blocking a drive-through when cops approached.
After about 41 minutes of questioning, he complied with the officers’ requests. He failed a breath test and when officers attempted to arrest him, he began to fight them.
Brooks grabbed the cop’s Taser and turned and fired it at them as he ran away.
Officer Garrett Rolfe opened fire on Brooks, hitting him twice in the back.
The prosecutor said that the shooting was justified because the Taser would be considered a deadly weapon.
