Facing their most important game in recent memory against a British rival, a galvanized Wales side should not be counted out on the mentality side of things, but their on-pitch endeavours against Iran left a lot to be desired.
England were not exactly firing on all cylinders against the USA either and will have a hard time breaking down a five-man Wales backline, but we are still expecting Southgate’s team to find their shooting boots and confirm a last-16 place, inflicting World Cup heartbreak on their neighbours in the process. England 1-0 Wales (Sportsmole)
After getting away with a bad performance against the USA, England should be able to kick up a gear and progress through to the last-16 with ease. Wales will pose a threat but come up against one of Europe’s meanest defences having so far underwhelmed. England 1-0 Wales (Standard)
It’s a battle of Britain in tonight’s (19:00) England vs Wales game.
It’s an important game for both teams, England will be on the hunt for a win so they can finish top of the table and silence the questions since their poor and boring game against the USA (0-0). Wales needs to win to have any hope of making it out of the group stages. They would also need Iran vs USA game to end in a draw.
England will face Wales at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
Wales’ 2-0 loss to Iran has dampened the team’s hopes of progressing after they produced a lacklustre game and were punished for it in the final minutes of the game – it had seemed like it would end 0-0.
But Welsh hearts broke when goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was shown a red card for a dangerous high tackle on Mehdi Taremi, and in injury time – the 98th minute, strikes from Roozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Razaeian sealed Wales’s fate.
Football is full of surprises – and this World Cup has seen several upsets. Shock losses for Argentina and Germany, and England’s goalless draw against the USA are some of the biggest shocks in the Qatar World Cup. These should have been easy wins. But that’s the beauty and joy of football – anything can happen.
To make it out of the Group Stages, Wales needs a particular set of situations to play.
Wales only have one point. They drew with the USA and lost to Iran. Wales must beat England and hope that Iran and the USA’s game ends in a draw to secure a place in the knockout stages.
But if either Iran or the USA win the game, it will knock Wales out – unless they can score by a four-goal margin against England.
Wales’ performance against Iran highlighted their lack of fitness and athletism – and left many agreeing that Wales just can’t play at this level. Their boss called the team’s performance against Iran “not acceptable” and their winless streak in all competitions now stands at seven matches.
If Wales doesn’t win and snatch all three points from the England game, it will be the first time in their history that they have gone through a major tournament without a single win to their name.
But there may be some hope for Wales. England put in a poor performance against the USA last week.
The uneventful draw with the USA was an embarrassment for England, who should have beaten them easily.
England looked tired and slow during the US game and will need a lot more creativity from them to secure the top spot.
A draw will be enough for England to progress, but it’ll likely dampen the mood amongst fans.
The game will mark the first time in history that England will face a fellow British nation in the World Cup.
Wales’ goalkeeper is still on suspension following his red card, meaning Danny Ward is likely to start.
Wales picked up no new injury worries during the Iran game, where Joe Allen featured after recovering from his hamstring injury.
Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey weren’t massively important to the Iran game but it’s likely they’ll both feature.
Daniel James and Brennan Johnson could also feature in the starting lineup, as well as Kieffer Moore who could provide some much-needed physical presence in the final third.
England seems to have an almost fully fit squad ahead of the game. James Maddison is back at training, and Kyle Walker is back to full fitness.
Ben White is understood to be ill.
We may see Walker return to the right-hand side over Kieran Trippier, despite calls for Trent Alexander Arnold to be introduced.
Southgate was reluctant to bring on Phil Foden for Mason Mount during the last game, but the final clash could see Foden in the number 10 role.
Harry Kane is yet to score his first non-penalty goal in this World Cup, but along with Raheem Sterling, both are expected to start.
