Power cuts could last for days in storm-hit Texas

Authorities in Texas have warned of prolonged power outages following severe weather that left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity.

Texas was previously hit by deadly storms and tornadoes over the Memorial Day weekend, resulting in at least 24 fatalities across several states. The region remains at risk for hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding, with similar conditions expected in Kansas and eastern Colorado, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Additionally, extreme heat is affecting southern Texas and southern Florida, with temperatures expected to rise in the southwest and parts of California. The NWS has issued a warning for “anomalous heat” in these areas.

In Dallas County, a disaster declaration was issued due to the severe storms. The city experienced significant disruption, including flooded streets, downed trees and power lines, and over 300 non-functional traffic lights. Weather-related fires destroyed homes and a historic church near Dallas, and widespread travel disruptions included numerous flight cancellations at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The recent Texan storms have resulted in multiple deaths, over 100 injuries, and significant property damage. Other storm-related fatalities were reported in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kentucky. In Kentucky, a family’s home was destroyed by tornadoes for the second time in three years.
