Breaking – Boris Johnson tells ministers he won’t quit

A defiant prime minister Boris Johnson has reportedly told his cabinet minister’s gathered at No 10, that he won’t quit as PM, despite their pleas he steps down.

The PM’s premiership has been spiralling since Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid dramatically quit last night – since then a massive 38 MPs have quit the government.

The PM told his MPs it would not be “responsible” for him to go. And at the Commons Liaison Committee, he ruled out calling a snap general election, saying the earliest date he can see will be for 2024.

According to the BBC, the PM has been stressing that “millions” voted for him and questioning whether any of his would-be successors would be able to “replicate his electoral success at the next election”.

1922 committee the next option to oust PM

Tory party bosses on the executive of the backbench 1922 committee have postponed a decision on whether to change the rules governing a vote of confidence – but elections to replace the committee will happen next week.

He survived a vote of no confidence last month, and under current rules, he isn’t supposed to face another one for 12 months. But that’s likely to change next week.

Priti Patel calls on Boris Johnson to resign – ‘loyalist turns on PM’

Priti Patel has reportedly called on Boris Johnson to resign, according to sources. A delegation of cabinet ministers have gathered at No 10 – including newly appointed chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, Grant Shapps and Kwasi Kwarteng, who are preparing to tell the prime minister to resign.

Reports are now coming in that Boris Johnson loyalist Priti Patel is also calling on the prime minister to resign – she was confirmed to be in No 10 but had been keeping quiet what side she was on.

After facing a bruising day – a grilling at PMQs, followed by a brutal resignation speech by Sajid Javid in the Commons (in which he appeared to confirm he was lied to over Partygate) to the liaison committee meeting this afternoon, which he faced questions of integrity over his premiership and within his government, he’ll now be told to quit by his top team.

But sources have now said, despite the calls from the delegation, the PM has no intentions of resigning.

So tonight we could witness a mass walkout of cabinet ministers.
