Cliff Notes – Peter Kay reveals shocking moment doctor warned his organ was deranged

    • Peter Kay underwent emergency surgery after being diagnosed with a large kidney stone, which his doctor described as causing ‘deranged’ kidney functions.
    • The comedian experienced severe pain while travelling, leading to a CT scan that confirmed his suspicions of a kidney stone.
    • Following his surgery, Kay rescheduled two shows on his UK tour due to the procedure, highlighting the impact of his health issues on his professional commitments.

Peter Kay reveals shocking moment doctor warned his organ was ‘deranged’

Peter Kay was suffering with pain and got some alarming information from his doctor.

Peter Kay has revealed he underwent emergency surgery after being told by a doctor his kidneys were ‘deranged’.

In his new book, Peter Kay’s Diary, which was released on Wednesday, the 52-year-old comedian detailed the horrifying health scare, which began with extreme pain while he travelled on the train to Wigan, which left him rushing to find a loo.

In March several years ago – days after his train pain – Peter began to feel a throbbing pain in his lower back, and after googling the symptoms he began suspecting he had a kidney stone.

He wrote, as per the Daily Mail: ‘Fast forward 24 hours, and my suspicions were confirmed via a CT scan at the local hospital. It turned out I had a big stone block in the exit of my right kidney.

‘He (urologist) reassured me, but said I needed emergency surgery to remove the kidney stone, which would also involve having a stent fitted at my urethra in order to maintain my kidney functions. F**k a duck.

‘My pre op bloods confirmed his suspicions that, apparently, my kidney functions were deranged. Well, that’s how the nurse delicately put it. As much as I was shocked, I was also relieved and felt vindicated, as I actually had something wrong with me, and it wasn’t just hypochondria.

His doctor told the comedian his kidneys were ‘deranged’

‘However, kidney stone pain is legendary, and I was starting to sob and make the occasional high pitched whining sound, like when you fire an air rifle at a dog’s testicles.’

Peter soon realised that part of his treatment would involve an invasion somewhere he would really rather not be invaded.

‘The penny dropped with a huge realisation. Oh, my God, he means he’s going in through the hole at the end of my penis,’ he said.

‘My world collapsed. Red lights flashed in my head. He can’t go up there? It’s out of bounds, private land. Area 51. A camera won’t fit up there, let alone one carrying a laser. Was this guy on glue?’

On getting the stent removed, Peter recalled that the urologist told him to breathe deeply and ‘grabbed my penis like he was grabbing a snake and squeezed it, which caused my eyes to bulge like a cartoon’.

‘It was painful and unpleasant and a dreadful experience I never wish to repeat. Ever!’ he said.

This revelation comes after Peter was forced to reschedule two nights of his UK tour after undergoing surgery for kidney stones once again.

    What are kidney stones?

According to Cleveland Clinic: ‘Kidney stones are solid masses or crystals that form from substances (like minerals, acids, and salts) in your kidneys. They can be as small as a grain of sand or — rarely — larger than a golf ball.’

The NHS states that larger kidney stones can cause symptoms, including:

    • Urine infection
    • Pain in the side of your tummy (abdomen) or groin – men may have pain in their testicles
    • A high temperature
    • Feeling sweaty
    • Severe pain that comes and goes
    • Feeling sick or vomiting
    • Blood in your urine

    Shows Cancelled in Nottingham

The comedian had a big kidney stone which had to be surgically removed.

The Bolton comedian has been touring consistently ever since he announced his long-awaited comeback to stand-up comedy in 2022.

However, in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Kay revealed that two shows in Nottingham have been moved from October to December after ‘routine surgery’.

‘We regret to inform you that due to a routine kidney stone procedure, Peter will be unable to perform his scheduled shows at Nottingham Motorpoint Arena on Sunday 5th October and Monday 6th October.’

Peter recently also opened up about his binge eating disorder, as he pinpointed the moment he knew he had a problem: when he snuck out of the cinema with his wife and pretended to pop to the loo, only to eat in secret.

He said, per The Sun: ‘I was doing really well with this diet, but I’m so bad with willpower. I had this hot dog and I caught a glimpse of myself reflected in, ironically, a framed poster for Babe.

‘I thought, look at you – what are you doing? You’re doing really well on this diet, you should be ashamed of yourself.’

He then admitted to throwing it in the bin, but then snatching it back before it hit the bin liner and still eating it.

While at an In Conversation With… event hosted by Sara Cox at The Lowry theatre in Salford, when asked if Peter had ever tried to intentionally lose weight, he replied: ‘Only for the first 48 years of my life. Yeah, I had to, eventually, because you start thinking about your health and things like that, don’t you?

‘I tried everything. Good God in heaven. I mean, you go to flaming weight-loss groups and stuff like that. I joined Slimming World and WeightWatchers. I did all of them.’

Peter surprised fans in 2024 when he unveiled a slimmer figure after a five-year absence from public life.
