A man has been given 10 life sentenced and additional 260 years in prison for killing eight people on a New York City bike path on Halloween 2017.
Islamic extremist Sayfullo Saipov in court on Wednesday said the tears of victims and their family members were little in comparison to the tears and blood that people of Islamic faith have endured. Saipov also injured 18 people in the attack in Manhattan.
‘The conduct in this case is among the worst if not the worst I’ve ever seen,’ said US District Judge Vernon Broderick.
A jury in March declined giving the death penalty to Saipov, who lived in New Jersey and is a citizen of Uzbekistan.
Prosecutors had sought eight consecutive life sentences for Saipov, one for each death, as well as another 260 years behind bars.
‘Saipov is an unabashed terrorist – a proud murderer who deserves no leniency and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,’ wrote prosecutors.
