Joe Hugill was thrilled to score his first goal in the Manchester United first team as he netted the second in a 2-0 friendly win over Leeds on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old came off the bench to double the Red Devils’ lead in Oslo, as Erik ten Hag gave plenty of youngsters a chance to shine, alongside some more experienced heads.
The likes of Rafael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Jadon Sancho and new signing Mason Mount all started the game, with Hugill coming on at half-time with a string of other young talents, including Noam Emeram who scored the first goal.
The Durham-born striker was obviously delighted to find the back of the net in front of a packed stadium in a United shirt and posted on social media after the game: ‘What a feeling, first goal for @ManUtd. Great start to pre season.’
Teammate Kobbie Mainoo replied, ‘Good man’ while fellow goal-scorer Emeram wrote, ‘My striker!!’
Manchester United’s official account showed their faith in the teenager, replying: ‘Never in doubt 🔥.’

Ten Hag was pleased with the youngsters who got a run out against the Championship opposition, with the likes of Alvaro Fernandez, Omari Forson, Hannibal Mejbri, Mainoo and Amad Diallo all in the starting XI.
‘It’s the first game and I think we have seen some good things,’ said the Dutchman. ‘We’ve already trained over the last year, so we have a good foundation. You can see that in the game. But yeah, also some young lads came in and they fit in.
‘We are now one week [into] training. We presented the rules and the principles. And what I see, what can I say: we have seen some good stuff.’
Specifically on goal-scorers Hugill and Emeram he added: ‘They’re coming in and it’s a big moment when you are coming up in the squad, in the first team.
‘You deserve game time because over long years you work for it. And then that moment in a very good and nice stadium, with a good crowd, and in such ambience they’re coming in and then score and win the game. That’s very good and nice.’
