A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a huge fire demolished an industrial estate in South Wales on Friday evening.
Ten fire crews rushed to the scene last night to tackle the enormous blaze, which tore through Bridgend Industrial Estate in Coychurch, off the A473.
The fire reportedly started at Formaction Limited on Kingsway, an industrial site development company.
Locals in the area reported hearing ‘loads of explosions’.
New aerial images show the impact of the monstrous inferno, as charred pieces of metal are all that remain of the roof.
South Wales West MS Tom Giffard said at the time: ‘View from the window a bit scary this evening as crews tackle a huge fire in Bridgend Industrial Estate.
‘My thoughts are with those caught up in this major incident and those emergency service personnel working hard to deal with the situation.’
Courtney Lamont-Hughes, 18, said she spotted the fire while driving past the industrial estate.
‘We were driving down the dual carriageway on the opposite side, we pulled in and came round to the main side of the fire,’ she told the BBC.
‘It looks like a massive building, lots of offices, it’s taken out the whole building.
‘The police and fire service told us to stay back.’
South Wales police said nobody had been injured by the blaze and that a local man had been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
The suspect is in the process of being questioned over the incident and the force is appealing to the public for information.
A police statement read: ‘Shortly before 8.30pm on Friday (January 19) emergency services were called to a major fire at a property on Bridgend Industrial Estate.
‘The building was safely evacuated and there are no reports of any injuries. The fire is now extinguished and a full investigation into the incident will begin as soon as it is safe to do so.
‘Local road closures remain in place and members of the public are advised to avoid the area, especially with the forecast high winds.
‘Efforts have also begun to enable neighbouring premises to resume business as usual when the area is secure.
‘Local businesses and the public are thanked for their understanding and patience while this incident is dealt with. Police officers investigating the incident have made an arrest.’
The fire was finally brought under control at around 8am on Saturday morning.
A fire department spokesperson said: ‘On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire at a substantial commercial unit. Multiple appliances and crews attended and Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control at approximately 08:00 hours this morning.’
