Liz Truss reaches out to MPs after Tory splits exposed
PM Liz Truss is set to hold a series of lunches with Tory MPs this week in an attempt to unite her party amid unreset over her premiership.
There has been calls for her resignation and a growing Tory rebellion following the mini-budget, the u-turn and last week’s Tory party conference.
Senior Cabinet heavyweights have been calling on backbenchers to unite behind the prime minister and stop the infighting. There are concerns that if Truss cannot get a grip on her party she could be ousted, and the Tory party could head for a large defeat in the next general election.
The appointing of Greg Hands – backer of Rishi Sunak – was appointed to a government post in an apparent bid to repair relations and unite the divided party.
Hands has been appointed trade minister, replacing Conor Burns who was sacked last week after a misconduct complaint.
Truss beat out Rishi Sunak in the leadership race to replace Boris Johnson – though it wasn’t a large-margin win.
Just one month into her premiership and it’s been fairly disastrous and the PM faces multiple potential rebellions on multiple fronts.
