For exactly three weeks, Ukraine has controlled a swathe of Russian territory thanks to a bold and risky offensive. These 1,294 square kilometres may represent only a tiny fraction of the vast Russia, but they are unprecedented since World War II: never before has a foreign army sent its tank columns across the border to take Russian hamlets and towns from Moscow’s sovereignty. Kiev now claims to have captured 100 of them, mainly villages, in the Kursk region.
“In the face of a massive invasion by Russia, Ukraine has an undeniable prima facie right to defend itself,” the researcher says.
