Belgium is officially multilingual and all three languages; Dutch, French and German are recognised as National languages.
The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east.
The history of the country has a lot to do with the languages that are spoken today. Belgium has been ruled by the Dutch, Germans during the second world war and in the past French.
