    Battle for Kyiv underway

    In the capital, a large explosion has been heard near Maidan Square and multiple explosions have been reported in the Troieshchyna area of the city.

    Artillery strikes on Kyiv have been loud enough to be heard miles away from the city centre, according to witnesses.

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a message overnight that Russian troops are attacking the country from multiple directions and will try to “storm” the capital city of Kyiv. Kyiv continues to be hit by Russian airstrikes.

    Russian forces have entered the capital Kyiv, meeting Ukrainian resistance in the suburbs

    President Zelenskyy said people in the city should prepare for a “tough night”. He said in a video message published at midnight local time: “This night, they will make an assault upon us. We all have to understand what we are going to face. This night, we have to withstand.”

    Ukraine’s president has tweeted that his French counterpart telephoned him late on Friday evening to confirm the EU had decided to remove Russia from the international bank payment system SWIFT.
