Kate Winslet has revealed her daughter Mia Threapleton would tell her to ‘shut up’ when they were working together on I Am Ruth.
The upcoming series sees Kate play the titular lead, a loving and concerned mother who notices her teenage daughter Freya (Mia) withdrawing as she becomes wrapped up by the pressures of social media.
Although her mum might be one of the biggest stars in the world, Mia made sure that she had some space on set.
Chatting about the show on Thursday’s Lorraine Kelly, Kate said she enjoyed being able to work with Mia on screen again, but made sure to back off at times.
‘I clicked into work mode at some stages, and I like to support younger actors anyway, so I was able to show her a few things here and there, just little tricks that I’ve learnt along the way,’ she said.
‘But as far as performance, she didn’t need me at all.

‘There were even moments where she would look at me and go “shut up mum, shut up, let me do it”.’
However, Kate added that she was impressed by her daughter’s work.
‘It was really amazing working alongside here and being blown away by her courage and she’s very, very powerful,’ she said.
While she said the series was ‘completely heart-breaking’ at times, they were both able to use their relationship to tell the story as truthfully as possible.
‘Doing something like this with my own daughter, it can overlap with personal experience, so we threw everything we had at it,’ she said.

It was so real that writer and director Dominic Savage also cast Mia’s high school English and Drama teacher too.
The show has previously featured Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure in I Am Nicola and Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones in I Am Victoria, while Samantha Morton was nominated for a Bafta for her turn in I Am Kirsty.
Mia, 21, is Kate’s eldest daughter, who she shares with first husband, film director Jim Threapleton.
She is also mum to son Joe, 18, with second husband, Bond director Sam Mendes, and eight-year-old son Bear with current husband Edward Abel Smith.

Mia already has a few acting credits to her name, including TV series Dangerous Liaisons and independent film Shadows.
She also acted opposite her mother previously, making an appearance in the minor role of Helene in 2014 film A Little Chaos, which also starred the late Alan Rickman and Helen McCrory.
I Am Ruth airs Thursday December 8 at 9pm on Channel 4.
