Christmas has come and gone, and many of us will have spent yesterday stuffing our faces with turkey and catching up with family and friends.
As we move into Boxing Day ( named so because in Victorian times the rich would box up any leftover gifts and give them to the poor) the post-Christmas blues may be beginning to set in.
But is Boxing Day a bank holiday? And are there any shops open today?
Let’s find out?
Is today a bank holiday?

Boxing Day is a bank holiday, meaning that many people will enjoy today (Monday December 26) off work.
Christmas Day ( December 25) is also usually a bank holiday, however, in 2022 it fell on a Sunday which is a day that many people already traditionally have off work.
Therefore, as a Christmas treat we have been granted another bank holiday the day after Boxing Day (Tuesday December 27) meaning an extra long weekend is in store for many Brits.
Are shops open today?
Many shops will be open today, as finding bargains in the Boxing Day sales is a tradition for many people ( although this has become less popular in recent years with the advent online shopping).
However, some major retailers will remain closed.
Major retailers that are closed on Boxing Day
Marks & Spencer
Aldi
Lidl
Poundland
Home Bargains
Pets At Home
Waitrose
John Lewis
Iceland
As today is a bank holiday, many shops will be operating on Sunday hours – although some businesses will be open for longer.
For example, Asda will be open from 10am to 4pm today, whereas Morrisons will be open from 9am to 6pm.
The best thing to do is to check the opening times of your local stores before heading out.
