India Kerala: At least 22 dead as boat capsizes
A double-decker tourist boat carrying around 50 passengers, twice its capacity, capsized in the southern Indian state of Kerala on May 8, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people, including women and children. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
Overcrowding caused the boat to capsize, according to local authorities, and many passengers were trapped under the boat in the dark. Several people are reported to be in critical condition in hospital. The cause of the incident is under investigation, and survivors have stated that many passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter.
