India bridge collapse – death toll rises to 141
There is heartbreak and shock in India following the collapse of a bridge in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday.
The death toll has risen to at least 141 people and dozens are injured.
Hundreds of people were on the pedestrian suspension bridge – a major tourist attraction in the Morbi district – when it collapsed into the Machchu river.
Officials confirm the victims include several children and elderly people.
The bridge had only reopened days earlier, following a closure for repairs.
Officials have said that the bridge may have been reopened without a “fitness certificate.”
An investigation into the collapse has been opened.
