Elon Musk is proving to be a tough boss to Twitter’s remaining employees, ending remote working and setting lofty targets.
After firing 3,700 employees, Musk’s first email to the remaining half of Twitter staff was to tell them that remote work would no longer be allowed.
Twitter staff would now be expected to come into the office for at least 40 hours per week, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.
In the email, Musk also told employees that he wanted to see subscriptions account for half of Twitter’s revenue.
Musk, who completed his $44 billion deal for the popular social media platform just two weeks ago, laid off half its workforce and several top executives.
He also announced a series of changes including a £7 a month charge for blue verification check marks and briefly introduced an ‘official’ tag that was scrapped just after a few hours.
Musk’s move reflects policies at his other companies, SpaceX and Tesla, where he had ordered staff back to the office saying WFH was ‘no longer acceptable’.
It’s known that Elon Musk is not a fan of remote working, previously giving Tesla employees an ultimatum to come into the office or leave.
Musk has been open about his distaste for remote work. The billionaire had once responded to the news of Apple’s move to let employees work from home, with a meme suggesting that employees ‘put on gym clothes’ and ‘watch TV’ instead of working.
Twitter employees who are used to a more lenient work culture, might have seen this coming as the billionaire had previously said that once he takes over Twitter, ‘work ethic expectations would be extreme’.
