Is it reasonable to be concerned? (Picture: Sony)

2023 sure is going to go down as an important year in gaming. It’s been great for quality so far, with some all-time classics already and hopefully more to come, but it’s going to be more famous because of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, and everything that the acquisition means for the future. I only have a PlayStation 5 though and, well, you can probably imagine that I’m feeling a bit worried about everything that’s happening.
I’m not one of those petition-signing crazies that wants to destroy Microsoft. I am instead someone that can only afford (and only really has time for) one console and has always found PlayStation exclusives to be much more my thing than anything by Xbox. That’s not technically true now though, because while I have little interest in any Activision Blizzard games I do usually like Bethesda games and would definitely have bought Starfield if it was on PlayStation.
That said, I’m not going to paying £400+ for a new console just so I can play it, and I’m sure that’s the same position for many people, which means I’m going to miss out on one of the year’s biggest games. Twice now, if you count Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, since I don’t have a Switch either. I’ll get Spider-Man 2, of course, but what else am I meant to look forward too, and what faith should I have that Sony still knows what it’s doing?
These are genuine questions, because I really don’t know. If Sony was keeping quiet because of the acquisition it obviously didn’t work and they haven’t changed course since either. So there seems every chance they won’t announce anything new this year at all. The only leaks we’ve had are about live service games, which I think I can say with confidence are not what most PlayStation fans are interested in.
I bought a PlayStation 5 because I enjoyed almost everything Sony put out for the PlayStation 4. Not only that but I thought games like God Of War, The Last Of Us Part 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn were some of the best games I’d ever played. Things started off well for the PlayStation 5 too, and it felt like I’d made the right decision, but then… nothing. Nothing for over a year now and Sony has given no indication that they recognise they’re being weird or offered any kind of assurance that they’ll go back to normal soon.
That terrible PlayStation Showcase over the summer was the point at which I really began to wonder if it’s ever going to get better and if I should sell my PlayStation 5 and get an Xbox Series S instead. I’m still considering that, but I keep thinking that all this must just be temporary and things will kick back into life soon, and this will just be seen as a minor blip. But nothing ever happens…
It worries me. It makes me worried I’ve backed the wrong horse this gen and it makes me worried for the future of PlayStation in general. Apart from an Xbox 360 I’ve always had a PlayStation console, not out of misguided loyalty but just because it seemed well attuned to my tastes and requirements. But what will be the state of PlayStation by the end of this generation?

Whether or not Microsoft makes good games is irrelevant to me because they’re not making the same types of game as Sony used to, and so I can’t get the style of entertainment I enjoy from them. Are third person action adventures, with a strong story, just going to disappear now? Will they only come back when Sony realises it’s made a mistake… in five years or so?
I don’t know. All I do know is that this milestone year is bringing me nothing but anxiety and despite how well the PlayStation 5 seems to be selling it feels to me, an ordinary fan, that it and PlayStation in general has never seemed so out of touch.
