Looking back on that iconic David Beckham free-kick 20-years-ago that sent England to the World Cup

Twenty years ago, David Beckham curled a ball over the Greece wall and sent it into the far corner of the goal – an iconic free kick in the 93rd minute that sent England to the world cup.

THAT free-kick on October 6 2001 became a defining moment in David Beckham’s football legacy.

England only needed one point to finish top from their final qualifier match, but the game against Greece saw England having one of their familiar off says.

The three lions went one down just before the break. Beckham ran free with the ball down the left side – not a teammate insight – when the Greece defence came charging at him. Beckham switched the ball right, then left, then right and then fouled.

Teddy Sheringham came on for the set-piece and he did.

But then England conceded another goal.

More free-kicks would come and Beckham got closer and closer with each one, and then he got one more chance.

Beckham placed the ball, his highly-valued right foot saw the ball go up and round and into the net. England had stolen a draw in the last few minutes to reach the World Cup.
