As scientists, environmentalists and activists continue to warn us against the serious consequences of climate change, we give you some simple steps that could reduce your carbon footprint and help preserve the Earth for the next generation.
These are some simple suggestions, which you can do at home without having to make drastic changes to our lifestyles.
Consume less meat
Now, we’re not suggesting to go full vegan, however, adopting a more plant-based diet will help the preservation of the environment drastically.
Cutting down meat consumption to a few days a week or even something as simple as switching from beef to chicken has significant advantages to the impact of climate change.
Stop buying plastic bottled water
Switch to an alternative, use reusable water bottles. It saves you money and keeps plastic out of the ocean and landfill.
Fit a filter system to your main water supply at home or install a special drinking water tap. Lots of bottled water companies will sell you the benefits of their product, but filtered home water is a viable alternative.
In the UK we used to export most of our plastic waste to China, who would recycle and reuse what they could. However, China has stooped imported global waste and as a result, all of our plastic will fall in a landfill in Africa or in the ocean.
Collect rainwater
Collect rainwater using buckets and if you have garden barrels. Use it to feed household plants and your garden.
You could even use it when you are washing your garden. It is a very simple and easy thing to do and can make a little difference that adds up.
Make purchases online or use email receipts
Cut out paper and pay your bills online, not only is it eco-friendly but saves you the hassle of filing it.
Most of the times you can ask your vendor to email you a receipt instead of keeping a printed copy.
Hang your washed laundry
Ditch the tumble dryer and hang your laundry on a line outside, if you don’t have a garden then you can hang them indoors and they will dry.
Unplug your electrics
Disconnect all appliances and chargers that are not in use. It saves you money and stops your electrical equipment consuming the bits of electric that add up.
Use Natural light
Avoid turning on the lights for as long as possible, instead, open the curtains and use natural daylight for longer.
Buy package-free
There are options to ditch packaging with a lot of big supermarkets when you order online. Alternatively, take your own bags or opt for food which is more widely recyclable.
You could even use old cardboard boxes in your supermarket run to save on purchases bags.
Green fingers
Okay, we know this is a bit more ambitious and difficult if you don’t have the garden space.
Start your own herb garden or vegetable patch. They’re super simple and require little effort, which saves you money and their fresh.
You can still by patches and use them on your windowsills in your apartments.
