Will Norma aka The Undertaker be related to Rita’s new alter-ego? (Picture: Lime Pictures)
Aside from ‘omg, yas!’, the casting of Rita Simons in Hollyoaks led to one major thought from fans – would her character be connected to Glynis Barber’s Norma, aka The Undertaker?
Rita is most famous for playing doomed EastEnders icon Roxy Mitchell, and viewers are aware that soap royalty Glynis played her troublesome mum Glenda in the soap.
The actresses have electric chemistry, portraying some explosive showdowns, while also exploring some real vulnerability in the process.
Glynis, who also previously starred in Emmerdale as Carl King’s detective lover, is now making her mark in Hollyoaks as dangerous gangster Norma, whose shell has been broken away since the reveal that Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) is her son.
Sources confirmed to Metro.co.uk that Rita’s character would be immediately central to some huge Hollyoaks storylines, thrust right into the action.
And you don’t get more action packed than The Undertaker herself.
Now, Glynis has told Metro.co.uk of her joy to be working with Rita once more, recalling their time in Walford with a great fondness.
Not only that, but she has cheekily hinted that they will be working very closely together once again…
‘Rita was my daughter in EastEnders is joining Hollyoaks and I am absolutely thrilled!’ she grinned.

‘She’s a great girl I love her, she’s a friend of mine, she’s great fun with a great energy and I think there’s going to be some very exciting times ahead!
‘There’s so much potential of storylines that could happen with Rita coming in.
‘The big questions are, what will those storylines be, and where will they go with this? I’m just hoping it’s going to be something that involves Norma...’
The show would be missing a great opportunity if not! Perhaps even history could repeat and a new mum and daughter dynamic could be born.
Glenda was hard work and a real handful, but Roxy’s new alter-ego might have even more of a challenge dealing with Norma!
Our source recently shared: ‘There’s a real buzz in the air about Rita joining the show – she’s a great signing!
‘Bosses have big plans for the character, who is going to be at the centre of some really big storylines and make a real impact.
‘To say she is going to stir things up will be an understatement.’
Rita commenced filming in recent weeks, lending speculation that she might land in the village around the time that Hollyoaks tends to go big in the autumn.
We’d expect nothing less than Rita landing with a bang!
The actress was controversially axed from EastEnders six years ago alongside co-star Samantha Womack, with Roxy and Ronnie drowning together in a swimming pool.
It sparked outrage among viewers at the time, a feeling that hasn’t particularly dissipated over the years.
Rita certainly isn’t ruling out another future return to EastEnders either, with repeated calls from fans for a return from the dead after a recent appearance as a vision for Roxy’s daughter Amy.
‘I could come back because you didn’t see my body,’ she mused. ‘I did this for the fans, the fans own this show. It’s the fans’ show and I did it for them…’

Even at the time of her exit, Rita took extra steps to keep that door ever so slightly open, having, on advice, refused to film a coffin scene.
She indicated that many executives had been unhappy with the decision to axe the Mitchell sisters.
Meanwhile, Glynis has long been defensive of her sinister Hollyoaks alter-ego, arguing in an interview with Metro.co.uk that Norma does everything recently with being a good mother in mind – she just does it in, um, interesting ways.
‘You have to find variety, you need to find an emotional life and an inner life so it was quite a challenge, really, to go from how she first came in to begin to see some glimmers of emotion,’ she reflected.
‘I think redemption has to be very much in a Norma way. There’s been a big turn around, really, in a year and I think she has formed a relationship with Warren.’
