Rockstar owner Take-Two has said that the GTA 6 hack won’t affect anything about the game, including its release date.
It might have been the biggest hack in video game history but the Grand Theft Auto 6 leak from September didn’t really reveal all that much new information. It confirmed a few previous rumours, especially regarding it being set in Vice City, and fans were able to guesstimate the size of the map, but that was about it.
Considering the hacker responsible is looking at some serious jail time, especially as he tried to blackmail Rockstar Games owner Take-Two – to get him to stop releasing more info, it doesn’t really seem like it was all worth it.
Take-Two has already said that the game won’t be delayed as a result of the hack and now, speaking to investors, they’ve said that no assets were taking – meaning that the hacker only got away with videos and not any of the code or 3D models from the game.
According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, ‘There’s no evidence that any material assets were taken.’ He added that: ‘The leak won’t have any influence on development or anything of the sort.’
What he didn’t do is give any indication of when GTA 6 might be released, with most estimates suggesting no earlier than 2024 and probably much later.
Zelnick was speaking to investors and also updated them on the latest figures for how many copies Grand Theft Auto 5 has shipped, which is now at a staggering 170 million copies since 2013.
The British teen believed to be responsible for the hack was supposedly part of the hacking group Lapsus$ and is accused of using a phone to perform the hack. Their case has been referred to a higher court, where it will be heard along with another ‘similar’ accusation.
It’s not confirmed what this is, but the same teen is believed to have also hacked into the networks of Microsoft and Nvidia. They have pleaded not guilty to the current charges of computer misuse.
