French Defence Minister questions whether Russia ‘really wants peace’ with Ukraine
French Minister Questions Russia’s Intentions in Ukraine Peace Efforts
French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin remarked on the uncertainty surrounding Russia’s commitment to a peace deal with Ukraine during an interview with Euronews. Her comments, made on Wednesday, follow her recent visit to Ukraine, where she observed ongoing attacks from the Kremlin, underscoring the situation’s urgency.
The significance of Vautrin’s statements lies in the backdrop of trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi last week, aimed at resolving the conflict. Although there was no immediate breakthrough, these discussions included a new prisoner swap deal and a commitment to future negotiations.
Catherine Vautrin Highlights Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine
During her visit to Ukraine last week, Vautrin was struck by the frequent alerts warning of imminent attacks, stating, “On the night I travelled between Poland and Kyiv, there were alerts in the west, there were attacks to bring down energy resources once again.” She expressed concerns regarding Russia’s desire for peace, questioning, “When we see this situation, we ask ourselves, do the Russians really want peace?”
Despite her reservations, Vautrin acknowledged the efforts by the United States to facilitate talks between Ukraine and Russia, noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated a June deadline for a potential agreement. Ukraine has accepted another US invitation for discussions set for next week, while Russia has yet to respond.
Missiles Identified as Critical Need for Ukraine
During her visit, Vautrin observed Ukraine’s anti-aircraft missile units and emphasised the critical importance of missiles for the country. “The issue is really the battle in the sky. That was the first thing President Zelensky asked me to do: to relay the need for missiles,” she explained.
Vautrin’s remarks were part of discussions at a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels. She stressed the necessity for European nations to comprehend that “defending Ukraine means defending Europe,” reinforcing that the security of the continent is closely tied to Ukraine’s security.
French Military Preparedness Stressed by Vautrin
The French Armed Forces Minister also addressed warnings from French military officials about a potential war with Russia, arguing that preparedness is essential. “The best way to avoid conflict is to prepare for it, and that is what we are doing,” she stated. This follows previous statements by France’s Chief of Defence Staff, who cautioned about the risks posed by Russia, a sentiment that has sparked debate about France’s approach to the ongoing conflict.
