Belgian federal police raid European Commission offices over alleged property sale irregularities

Belgian federal police raided several European Commission premises on Thursday, 12 February 2026, as part of an investigation into the sale of real estate assets to the Belgian government’s investment arm, the Federal Participation and Investment Company, in 2024. This latest development is significant as it involves the purchase of 23 Commission buildings, which are reportedly valued at around €900 million.

The investigation centres on the sale that occurred during the previous mandate of Johannes Hahn, who was the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration at the time. A spokesperson for the European Commission stated that the organisation is committed to cooperating with the relevant authorities, emphasising that it will “provide any information and assistance needed to ensure a thorough and independent investigation into this matter”.

Furthermore, the spokesperson added that the Commission believes the sale of the buildings adhered to established procedures and protocols, asserting confidence that the process was conducted in a compliant manner. Investigators have chosen to withhold further details to prevent jeopardising the investigation.
