Five migrants die trying to cross English Channel in boat
Tragedy struck as five migrants lost their lives in French waters while attempting to cross the Channel, according to a French maritime official reporting to the BBC. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning when approximately 70 individuals were trying to board a small boat from a beach near Wimereux, south of Calais, resulting in the vessel overturning.
Overnight rescue operations in Wimereux led to saving dozens of people from the water. Foreign Secretary David Cameron expressed his sorrow, deeming the incident “heartbreaking.” Local authorities revealed that four of the deceased migrants hailed from Iraq and Syria.
The latest update indicated that 32 people had been successfully rescued, with one individual sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
