Five killed in shootings in northern France
Five people were killed in a series of shootings in northern France, including near a migrant camp in Loon-Plage, close to Dunkirk. A 22-year-old man has surrendered to police and confessed to the attacks, according to French media.
The killings unfolded within two hours on Monday. A 29-year-old man was fatally shot outside his home in Wormhout at 3:15 PM local time. Less than an hour later, two security guards, aged 33 and 37, were killed near a port in Loon-Plage. Minutes afterwards, two men staying at a nearby migrant camp, aged 19 and 30, were also shot dead.
Authorities found several firearms in the suspect’s car, and he was previously unknown to police. The motive remains unclear, said Dunkirk Mayor Patrice Vergriete, who described the incident as a “tragedy.”
Loon-Plage hosts migrant settlements near the Strait of Dover, a crossing point for people attempting to reach the UK. A large emergency presence was reported near the camps, though it is not confirmed if the shootings occurred within a settlement.
Dunkirk’s Mayor Patrice Vergriete said the motive behind the attacks “remains unknown”.
Several firearms were found in the suspect’s car and he was previously unknown to police, the prosecutor’s statement said.
All five murders were reportedly committed within less than two hours in the Dunkirk area.
