Spyro Reignited Trilogy – if you don’t count the remakes or Skylanders, there hasn’t been a proper new Spyro game since 2008 (pic: Activision)
Spyro fans are hoping a brand new game is in the works thanks to a recent Tweet by Toys For Bob, which did the 2018 remakes.
Back in 2021, there were concerns that Toys For Bob, the developer behind the Spyro The Dragon remakes and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, had been demoted to just another Call Of Duty support studio.
Fears of it not getting to work with either Spyro or Crash again were alleviated during The Game Awards this past December, when Activision announced that Toys For Bob is working on a new multiplayer Crash title called Crash Team Rumble.
Now, it’s believed the studio isn’t done with Spyro either, with Toys For Bob appearing to tease something involving the purple dragon for his 25th anniversary.
This comes from a recent Twitter post where Toys For Bob shared a mood board for 2023. It’s fairly innocuous, with obvious references to Crash Team Rumble, which launches this year, and Call Of Duty.
However, you can also see Spyro flying about in the top left corner alongside a ‘25th’ balloon. Since this year marks Spyro’s 25th anniversary (September 9, to be precise), that’s most likely what Toys For Bob is referring to.
It didn’t take long for fans to assume that this could be a hint at a new game, with several holding out hope for it to get the same treatment as Crash Bandicoot 4.

Please, please let these be a Spyro 4 announcement soon! I’m excited to see how Spyro 4 will be handled after the incredible job you did with Crash 4 🙂

PLEASE DON’T LET SPYRO DIE AGAIN

Crash 4 was something of a series reboot that picked up right after the third game and returned to the original gameplay style that the series had deviated from in recent years.
Considering Spyro has undergone two such reboots already (the more action driven The Legend Of Spyro series and the toys-to-life Skylanders franchise), a Spyro 4 that goes back to his platformer roots is a popular choice among fans.
Toys For Bob was responsible for remaking the original trilogy of PlayStation 1 platformers so it helming a brand new entry makes a lot of sense.
However, there’s no guarantee that a Spyro related announcement this year will be anything monumental. It’s already widely believed that Spyro will make an appearance in Crash Team Rumble, which is possible considering he was a DLC character for the 2019 Crash Team Racing remake.

There have also been instances of other important video game anniversaries being disappointingly quiet. Nintendo had nothing to say about Donkey Kong’s 40th in 2021 or Mario Kart’s 30th last year.
Crash’s own 25th anniversary was practically a non-event as well, with its biggest announcement being a bundle containing the modern Crash remakes and Crash 4.
Ideally, this won’t be the case with Spyro’s anniversary, but no one will know for certain until either Toys For Bob or Activision make a formal announcement.
