Exposed – the mysterious Independent newspaper headline
The past few days have been dominated by Prince Harry’s book Spare and the revelations inside. On Tuesday, the memoir was officially released and has become the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever in the UK.
In the days leading up to the release, there had been several leaks, which created wild headlines around the world. Then there were the days of promo, which saw the former royal sit down for several interviews in the UK and US.
During the media blitz tour to promote his book, one headline popped up in The Independent that caught my eye.
The Independent – a British left-wing paper that is so liberal it has been described as being republican ( wanting to be rid of the monarchy). The paper’s official stance on the British monarchy is that it is a reformist – wishing for a reformed monarchy that “reflects the nation over which it reigns and which is accountable to the people for its activities.”
With this in mind, it’s no surprise The Independent has largely been supportive of Harry and Meghan over the years and often features opinion pieces supporting the couple and condemning the royal family.
So I was surprised when I saw Tuesday’s online front page which led with ‘sources’ that claimed the royal family believe Harry has been “Kidnapped by a cult of psychotherapy” – the online article quotes it as “Kidnapped by a cult of psychotherapy and Meghan”, an unusually tabloid-style front page for the paper.
Prince Harry has widely discussed how members of his family and their press offices work with the tabloids to secure good headlines for themselves.
It’s worth noting that this sudden change of tone from the paper towards Harry comes as the former Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday editor-in-chief Geordie Greig was recently announced as the paper’s new editor.
Geordie Greig is a close friend of Camilla, the Queen Consort.
So, is Camilla the source?
