Eid 2023 London events: UK Muslims mark the end of Ramadan, where to celebrate in the city?
The end of Ramadan is being marked by many Muslims today as Eid celebrations close out a month-long period of fasting during daylight hours.Â
Eid al-Fitr, one of the two Eid festivals in the Islamic calendar, marks the end of Ramadan.Â
Muslims traditionally gather together in parks to celebrate with large-scale events, festival food, prayer, and stalls. The name “Eid al-Fitr” comes from an Arabic term meaning the “feast of breaking the fast.”
While not a standard public holiday in the UK, it is celebrated in many Muslim countries. The date of Eid is determined by the sighting of the moon, so the start and end of Ramadan vary from year to year. In 2023, Ramadan began on the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd in the UK, and Eid celebrations were able to begin on Friday, April 21st.
Muslim communities across the UK have organised numerous events to celebrate Eid, with London leading the way. While some events are large-scale, many individuals celebrate at home with family and friends, with sweets and traditional dishes. The weekend is set to be rainy but it won’t stop communities from finding creative ways to celebrate and come together, including virtual events and drive-through Eid celebrations.
