BREXIT: NO CHANCE OF A DEAL UNLESS BACKSTOP IS DROPPED
BBC News reports unless the withdrawal agreement is reopened and the backstop dropped there is no prospect of a deal. The EU has rejected Boris Johnson’s proposal to implement “alternative arrangements” for the UK-Irish border. With Donald Tusk saying it was “insurance to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.”
Mr Johnson said the reaction to his demand for the backstop to be dropped had been “a bit negative” but “we will get there.” Adding, “I think there is a real sense now that something needs to be done with this backstop. We can’t get it through parliament as it is.” It was also confirmed as of 1 September, government officials will stop attending most EU meetings.

PC HARPER: MOTHER OF COP ‘KILLER’ CLAIMS HER SON IS INNOCENT
The Daily Mail says the mother of Jed Foster, the man charged with murdering PC Andrew Harper, claims her son wasn’t at the crime scene. Jed Foster, 20 appeared in court on Tuesday and his mother, clutching a Superman teddy bear, watched from the public gallery. Earlier, she had written on Facebook: “I know you can’t read this baby, please stay strong.
You have many, many messages sending their thoughts. We know you would never be capable of such a horrible, horrific act.” She says a lot of things don’t add up and statements and CCTV that could provide evidence of where Mr Foster was have not been collected. Her daughter also protested Foster’s ‘innocence’ in a Facebook post.

ASYLUM SEEKER TOLD HE’S NOT ‘EFFEMINATE’ ENOUGH TO BE GAY
The Independent reports a man seeking asylum in the UK on grounds of his sexuality is to have his case retried. The man, who cannot be named, was told he was not “effeminate” enough to be gay. The judge said he did not have a gay “demeanour” and did not “look around the room in an effeminate manner.”
The judge reportedly said that “on the gay scene younger men are highly valued.” A judge in the Upper Tribunal found that the original verdict contained a “material error of law.” The man’s asylum claim is now set to be reheard.
