A civil trail over a columnist’s claims that former President Donald Trump raped her in a department store dressing room is set to begin on Tuesday.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin in a Manhattan federal court in the trial centered on writer E Jean Carroll’s allegations that Trump raped her in the mid-1990s.
The trial is slated to start as Trump faces mounting legal problems, including the historic first criminal charges against a former US president in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s hush money investigation.
Trump on Tuesday may be in New York City for the third time this month for a legal proceeding. After pleading not guilty to 34 felony counts in the hush money case on April 4, Trump on April 13 sat for his second deposition in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ $250million civil lawsuit alleging fraud by him and his company.
Carroll has indicated that she plans to testify.
Meanwhile, it is not known if Trump will appear in court or take the witness stand. A lawyer for Trump has said they will decide during the trial if the ex-president goes under oath, the Washington Post reported. Trump is not obligated to show up in court.
The trial is expected to run a week or more.
