Like many people I use the social networks to communicate, debate, discuss and entertain others online but I must confess I’m totally baffled when trying to decode the messages conveyed by pouting Instagrammers.
Now, to their horror I’m sure, Instagram is hiding the number of likes on posts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Japan and Brazil, in order to alleviate the burden of pressure on users.
My posts carry a running total for those who’ve ‘liked’ my contributions and while I can’t compete with high profile personalities like Cheryl and Rihanna who get hundreds of thousands of likes, I’m quite happy when my offerings run into three figures.
However, in this new trial, all outsiders will see instead of exact numbers is a user name “and others” below their contributions. Instagrammers will still be able to view the number of likes their own posts receive so no need to panic.

However, the reason for the trial is that online experts reckon that young people can feel a lack of self-esteem if they don’t get enough ‘likes’ on their images.
My advice would be: stop pouting and put something up which we can all engage or identify with if you want more hits. My particular concern is with yummy mummies who use their bairns as trophy tots and backdrops for their pouting pictures.
Plump, pouting rosebud lips lashed in lip gloss is really not a good look in every single shot. I despair that so many young men and women lead such dull lives that we get treated to the same look with a different backdrop, daily. It’s boring!
Instagram says it wants users to feel less judged; well if that’s the case why don’t users zhuzh up their boring lives and do something the rest of us will find interesting.
I realise that the number of likes is also a way of making money by attracting commercial offers from marketing companies and that so-called ‘influencers’ can earn megabucks for the content they showcase in their posts.
All credit to them but most work hard to attract the number of likes to their social media activities well beyond plumping their lips and pouting.
