Days Gone – is it one of the PlayStation’s best? (pic: Sony)
A reader is upset that Days Gone is never going to get a sequel and argues that it’s a better game than The Last Of Us Part 2.
I’m one of those people that thought Days Gone absolutely deserved a sequel and I was very upset when it became clear that Sony had no intention of making one. Especially when the director revealed that it had sold just as well as Ghost Of Tsushima, which is getting a sequel. Days Gone might not have been particularly original but I don’t think Ghost Of Tsushima was either, considering it’s basically just old-fashioned Assassin’s Creed.
Zombies might seem overdone at this point but Days Gone did them pretty differently, with very unique lore and the best open world story I’ve ever seen with them. The motorbike was cool too and the hordes were amazing, literally like nothing else before or since.
I get the feeling we’ve never had the full story on why a sequel didn’t happen. Maybe developer Bend Studio had a falling out with Sony or maybe too many people left that were involved with the first one. It just doesn’t make sense not to have made another one, consider it was successful.
What really frustrates me though is that I feel it is a much better game than The Last Of Us Part 2, which gets all the attention. They’re both quite similar, with both having a type of zombie as the main enemy, but The Last Of Us is treated much more seriously because of its story. But in terms of playing it… I think Days Gone is a lot more enjoyable.
I also think The Last Of Us’ story is overrated. It’s well written and acted, obviously, but the points it’s making, about the cycle of violence, are pretty basic and could’ve been made in a third of the time the game actually lasts. The story’s really the only appeal and yet it drags on forever.
In gameplay terms, The Of Us Part 2 is almost identical to the first game and barely changes at all throughout the whole game, which lasts a painful 24 hours or more. Days Gone has a lot more variety and is actually built to be a video game, rather than just an interactive TV show where the story is all that matters.
Days Gone had a perfectly good story and while the dialogue might not have been as well written, at least it wasn’t all as predictable and miserable as The Last Of Us Part 2. However, there’s no point me trying to make it out to be a terrible game, because clearly it’s very successful. I don’t even hate it, but I was bored of it long before the end, which was not the case for Days Gone.
I guess I’m also resentful because it got all the praise, and spin-offs and attention from Sony, and yet Days Gone is never coming back and anyone that hasn’t played it is going to assume it deserves it. After all, why would Sony disown a good quality, successful game?

I would love to know the answer to that myself, as the only exclusive games I’d say were unquestionably better than it are the God Of War games. You could argue maybe the Horizon games as well, but I’d say it was quite a close run thing and they’re actually quite similar once you get past the individual themes, and personally I prefer zombies to robot dinosaurs.
It’s all down to personal taste, I suppose, but while we’ll be getting new The Last Of Us games forever, whether Naughty Dog want to make them or not, it looks like we’ve already seen the end of Days Gone. Which makes the name kind of ironic in hindsight.
