Dam bursts and death toll rises in Brazil floods
A big dam broke in southern Brazil after heavy rain, killing over 30 people. More than 60 others are missing. About 15,000 people have left their homes since Saturday. Power and clean water are out for at least 500,000 people in the state.
The dam burst caused a 6.6-foot wave, making the flooded areas worse. It’s between Cotiporã and Bento Gonçalves. Hotter temperatures, humidity, and strong winds caused this wild weather.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited and promised help. Governor Eduardo Leite asked for urgent help to rescue hundreds in many towns. Helicopters are searching for stranded folks. In some places, the floods are so bad that helicopters can’t land, so they have to lift people to safety.
