BBC News says letters are being sent to more than 65,000 retired doctors and nurses asking them to return to the NHS to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
Senior officials say ex-employees are needed to boost frontline service.
Meanwhile, the government has pledged to ensure that all hospitals have enough protective gear and ventilators.
It has also published a list of key workers in England whose children will still be able to go to school after they shut down across the UK later.

California governor orders the entire state to stay at home, saying 56% could get coronavirus
France24 reports California’s governor has issued an unprecedented statewide “stay at home order” directing the states 40 million residents to stay in their homes for the foreseeable future.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s directive, effective immediately, marks the largest and most sweeping government clampdown yet in the worsening public health crisis, which he believes could infect more than half of the state within eight weeks.
“We are confident the people of California will abide by it, they will meet this moment,” Newsom, a Democrat in his first term as governor of the nation’s most populous state, told a late-afternoon news briefing from the state capital in Sacramento.

France may extend 14-day coronavirus lockdown, claims ‘idiots’ breaking rules
Fox News says France is likely to extend its two-week lockdown to try to slow the coronavirus pandemic as the country’s interior minister blasted “idiots” ignoring the order to stay at home.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said French citizens were underestimating the risk. “These are people who think they are modern-day heroes by breaking the rules while they are in fact idiots,” he told Europe 1 Radio, according to AFP.
After announcing the 15-day lockdown for the entire country, the French government on Tuesday enacted a policy mandating that anyone who leaves their home must have official documentation stating their reason for being outside.

India hangs four men over the 2012 Dehli bus gang rape and murder
Aljazeera News reports India executed four men on Friday for the gang rape and murder of a woman on a Dehli bus in 2012 that sparked nationwide protesting and international revulsion.
The four were hanged before dawn at Tihar Jail in the Indian capital, the head of the prison, Sandeep Goel, told AFP news agency, in India’s first use of capital punishment since 2015.
“Today, justice has been done after seven years,” the victim’s mother told reporters outside the prison. “I salute Indian judiciary and thank god for hearing our prayers … my daughter’s soul can now rest in peace.”

English football suspended until April 30
WTX News reports all elite English football will be suspended until at least 30 April because of the continued threat of coronavirus.
All of the Premier League games, EFL, Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship, and all fixtures in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, are currently postponed.
The UK government has attempted to play down the prospect of an imminent lockdown in London, a day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson declined to rule out stricter measures for the city.
