Arab News reports China has jailed nine people, one with a suspended death sentence, for illegally selling fentanyl to US buyers, the result of a joint investigation over a drug that has killed thousands of Americans.
The US has long accused China of being the main source of the deadly opioid. On Thursday, a man with the surname Liu was given the death sentence with a two-year reprieve while eight others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to life, the Xingtai Intermediate People’s Court said.

CNN says Italy is attempting to position itself as the world leader of environmental education. As of next year, Italian students in every year will be required to study climate change and sustainability.
The Education Minister said all public schools will include 33 hours a year to their curriculum to study issues linked to climate change. And will be built into existing civics classes, which will have an “environmentalist footprint” from September 2020. In addition, sustainable development will appear in more traditional subjects such as maths, geography and physics.

US ‘pullout’ from Syria looking more like permanent occupation with 800 troops reportedly tasked to ‘protect’ oil
RT News says the long-awaited US withdrawal from Syria appears to be postponed. It has been claimed 800 troops will stay behind to “guard” Syria’s oil, in a mission even pro-war US politicians are calling “reckless.”
US troops will occupy a large, oil-rich area the Trump administration announced on Tuesday. A total of about 800 troops will be in the country, with some 600 in the Kurdish-controlled northeast plus the 200 in the south.
The decision to leave 800 troops behind seems to cancel out Trump’s promise to bring home 1,000 troops stationed in Syria. The US president has repeatedly bragged “we’re keeping the oil.”

Picadilly theatre evacuated after ceiling collapses during show

Witnesses say they heard screams from the audience members, who had been watching a performance of Death of a Salesman. Three men and two women were treated by paramedics at the scene for cuts and injuries caused by falling debris, London ambulance services said.
“Four of them were then taken to hospital and one was discharged after treatment,” a spokesman said. “A further two people declined treatment at the scene.”
