Breaking News: Boris Announces New England Lockdown To Last At Least 6 Weeks
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced, in a televised address to the nation, that England is set to go into its third national lockdown for at least six weeks. PM announces new England lockdown, with people told to stay at home and schools shut for most pupils from tomorrow
All primary and secondary schools and colleges in England are to close for most pupils from tomorrow until February half-term, Boris Johnson has announced.
Johnson begins his address by saying when the country was fighting the old variant “our collective efforts were working and would have continued to work”.
But he says the new variant is “both frustrating and alarming” to see the speed it is spreading.
Scientists believe it is between 50% and 70% more transmissible, so people are much more likely to catch the virus and to pass it on, he adds.
Hospitals are also under more pressure from Covid than at any time since start of pandemic, he says.
- By Feb all key group expected to be vaccinated – restrictions could be eased if all groups vaccinated and people follow lockdown rules.
- Likely restrictions until March.
- All schools and colleges closed in England from tomorrow and people told to work from home.
- New mutant strain overwhelming NHS.
- Exams this summer cancelled.
