Covid-19 pandemic is over in the US – Joe Biden
US president Joe Biden has declared the pandemic is over in America, despite the number of Americans who have died from Covid continuing to rise.
He said that while “we still have a problem,” the situation was rapidly improving.
The latest statistics show that over 400 Americans on average are dying from Covid every day.
The WHO said the end of the pandemic “was in sight.”
In an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Biden said the US was still doing “a lot of work” to control the virus.
Following his comments in the interview, White House officials told US media on Monday that the comments did not signal a change in policy and there were no plans to end the ongoing Covid-19 public health emergency.
In August, the public health emergency had been extended through to 13 October. It has been in place since January 2020.
So far, more than one million Americans have died with Covid – the US has the highest Covid death toll over any other nation, followed by India and Brazil.
Around 65% of the total US population is considered fully vaccinated.
