It’s a terrible reaction from Ches (Picture: ITV)
There’s disappointment ahead for Gemma Winter (Dolly-ose Campbell) on Coronation Street, when Chesney (Sam Aston) dashes her hopes of a dream wedding. Or any wedding at all, in fact.
After getting involved in helping Tyrone (Alan Halsall) pick Fiz (Jennie McAlpine)’s wedding dress, and with news of Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) and Daniel (Rob Mallard)’s engagement, Gemma decides it should be her turn to walk down the aisle.
‘It is a little bit of watching everybody around her planning to get married and her feeling a bit of competition with the other people,’ Dolly-Rose Campbell told us. ‘She is thinking, why is everyone else getting to have their happy ever after and I’m not?’
As a busy mum looking after five children and holding down a job, Gemma is also beginning to feel that she has nothing to look forward to. She starts to think a wedding would be something lovely for her to get excited about and look forward to.
‘[There’s] a bit of weariness with her situation where every day is the same and she would just like something to look forward to, something for her that is not just about the kids,’ Dolly explained. ‘Something outside of just being a mum, because her whole identity now is just “mother of the quads.”’

Sadly this dream is smashed when Chesney points out the harsh reality – that there just isn’t any spare money for a wedding.
‘She knows what he says is true but she is just weary with it all,’ Dolly said. ‘It is exhausting, it is like she is swimming but she is treading water and not actually getting anywhere.
‘She has got to the point where she would like to be able to try and put some money aside, or do something to try and earn more so she can have something to look forward to and do something nice for herself, rather than the money always going on the mundane necessities.’
Will Gemma find a way to earn some more cash?
Chesney reacts terribly to Gemma’s idea.
