Griff took shocking action after Roy pulled his speech apart (Picture: ITV)
Roy (David Neilson), Gary (Mikey North), Brian (Peter Gunn) and Maria (Samia Longchambon) turned out at a meeting about the environment in Coronation Street.
Little did they know that the meeting was a front for Griff (Michael Condron) and his far right gang to push their agenda.
Griff’s message was hardly subtle, though. He was soon laying the blame for every problem at the door of ‘invasive species.’ He mentioned grey squirrels and other animals, but it was all a thinly veiled reference to people who weren’t originally from the UK coming to these shores. Soon he was ranting about the NHS being ‘overwhelmed.’
As some of those present registered shock and Maria spoke up against Griff, it was Roy Cropper who made the most impact. He’d been taking notes on Griff’s speech and began to take it apart, outlining the numerous factual inaccuracies and making Griff look like the pathetic, lying racist that he is.
He was warmly applauded by everyone in the room apart from Griff’s gang, who just looked confused.
Griff’s despicable words were set against an earlier scene in which Daryan (Twana Omer) read out a statement he’d prepared to support his application to stay in the country to Gary and Maria.
They were visibly moved as he outlined his hazardous journey to the UK in a dangerously crowded boat, and how his brother had been taken off the boat and they’d become separated. Daryan said he just wanted to be safe and have the chance to work and to find his uncle who is in the UK, but ‘Wherever we went we were hated.’
Maria couldn’t bear that Daryan had gone through so much only to suffer being beaten up in a place where he should have felt safe.

Max (Paddy Bever)’s involvement with Griff’s gang is getting deeper, much to David (Jack P. Shepherd)’s concern and also to the concern of Spider (Martin Hancock).
Undercover cop Spider is walking a fine line with the gang, as Griff has started to suspect that Spider isn’t as committed to the cause as he could be. Meanwhile, Spider is helpless to keep Max out of trouble even though he can see exactly how he’s being manipulated by the gang.
More: Soaps
As far as Griff is concerned, Max has some very useful skills. As well as being a dab hand at producing flyers, he’s also good at video editing. After a few choice edits of the film he’d made of the meeting at the community centre, the video told a very different story. Now, rather than showing Roy taking apart all of Griff’s arguments, Roy was seemingly agreeing with everything Griff had said, and the applause was all for Griff.
It was a neat illustration of how the truth can be twisted to tell a different story – but Roy is going to be sickened if he ever sees it.
And meanwhile, Griff’s hold on Max is getting tighter all the time…
