Under Boris Johnson, Penny Mordaunt was sacked as defence secretary. She returned to the government as international trade minister but has remained relatively unknown. But somehow the ambitious candidate topped a YouGov poll of more than 800 Tory Party members as the favourite to win.
She was prominent in the Leave campaign in the 2016 referendum.
She has been described as “socially liberal.”
What are Penny Mordaunt’s policies?
Penny has lent into her Royal Navy reservist career stating that the party needed “to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship”.
She has put a lot of emphasis on the need for change in the wake of the recent chaos.
Ms Mordaunt has said she was “shocked at the stupidity of what has taken place” in Downing Street over Partygate.
She has promised to half VAT on fuel and raise income tax thresholds for basic and middle-income earners.
She has promised to “give power back to parents” by ensuring universal access to subsidised childcare before children start school.
She says Whitehall is “broken” and has promised to modernise the way the government is run with a “tighter” cabinet.
