China quake kills more than 100, rescue efforts dire amid freezing conditions
A devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck rural Gansu province in north-west China, killing at least 105 people and leaving over 250 others injured. The neighbouring Qinghai province has also suffered, with an additional 13 fatalities and 182 injuries reported.
Rescue operations are facing challenging conditions, battling freezing temperatures plummeting below -13°C in their search for survivors. Officials say that the sub-zero temperatures have shortened the “golden window” for finding survivors, adding urgency to the rescue efforts.
The quake has caused extensive damage, impacting over 5,000 houses and disrupting roads, power, and water supplies, further complicating rescue endeavours.
