Baftas 2023 full winners list: All Quiet on the Western Front wins big
The German remake of the WW1 epic, All Quiet on the Western Front, won big at last night’s Baftas ceremony – taking home seven awards, including best film.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a powerful and poignant film based on the novel written by Erich Maria Remarque, first published in 1929. The story takes place during World War I and follows the experiences of a group of young German soldiers as they navigate the brutal realities of trench warfare on the Western Front.
The film won best-adapted screenplay, best film not in the English language and best director.
Its seven wins mean it has broken the Bafta record for most awards won by a film not in English.
Irish film – The Banshees of Inisherin – was amongst the other big winners, taking home outstanding British film (due to funding from Film4) and two acting awards.

Baftas 2023 – ‘This is truly extraordinary’
In his speech for best film not in the English language, director Edward Berger said the filmmakers “grew up with a responsibility to tell the story” and were honoured the public had “accepted it with overwhelming love”.
Kerry Condon and Barry Keogan won best supporting actress and actor for the dark comedy – Banshees of Inisherin. The movie won outstanding British film despite being set in Ireland and its Irish storyline and actors.
Director Martin McDonagh joked: “Best ‘what’ award?” and then clarified the film was eligible for the category due to financing from Channel 4.
He also accepted the prize for best original screenplay. In his speech, he said: “Making such a sad film shouldn’t have been this much fun, but it was because of [the cast].”
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley also won big – taking home four awards – best casting, costume design, makeup and hair, and leading actor.
Austin Butler said in his acceptance speech: “This is truly extraordinary. To my fellow nominees, I am in awe of you. I am so grateful for all these times we’ve been able to spend together.”
He added: “I want to thank the Presley family, I cannot thank you enough for your love. I hope I’ve made you proud.”
