The Paralympic Games are continuing a summer of sporting excellence. Thousand of athletes from all over the world are competing in the 2024 Games, which are taking place just over two weeks since the Olympics drew to a close. Though it celebrates multiple disciplines of sport like the Olympics, the event has some significantly different traditions and practices, particularly when it comes to the medals the athletes receive in their respective sports. For blind athletes taking part in the Games, how are they able to tell which medal they have won? How do blind Paralympians know which medal they’ve won?…

Paris was a whirlwind but what a privilege it was to be a part of it. I’m very much enjoying being home again but my the last few weeks are finally starting to sink in and I’m realising that I’m officially an Olympian. An Olympic Games is a pretty special event. With most of the world’s attention set on one place for two weeks, everything feels a lot more intense and exaggerated. Suddenly it’s not just the climbing community watching us compete! It was a hard thing to process while I was out in France but it feels as if…

British wheelchair tennis sensation Alfie Hewett will be looking to claim the only major honour missing from his bulging trophy cabinet at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Having claimed the Wimbledon singles title for the first time in his career earlier this summer, Hewett is gunning for gold on the clay courts of Roland-Garros. Hewett is also in action in the French capital alongside long-term tennis partner Gordon Reid, as they look to go one better than the silver they claimed in Tokyo three years ago. Hewett’s story is one of determination, with his life-long disability not stopping him from fulfilling…

Luis Diaz has encouraged Mohamed Salah to stay at Liverpool beyond the end of the season, admitting it would be ‘very hard’ for the club should the forward decide to move on. Salah has cemented his status as an all-time Liverpool great since swapping Roma for Anfield back in 2017, with the Egyptian playing an instrumental role across Jurgen Klopp’s trophy-laden tenure on Merseyside. But Salah has entered into the final 12 months of his contract at Liverpool and the attacker appeared to confirmed that it would be his ‘last year’ with the Reds following the side’s 3-0 win at…

Dame Sarah Storey has hit out at Paralympics organisers after winning gold in the women’s C5 time trial. The 46-year-old won the 18th Paralympic gold medal of her career on Wednesday after finishing first in the event for the fifth Games in a row. But Storey, who is Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time, was furious with the decision to shorten the women’s course around Clichy-sous-Bois in the eastern suburbs of France’s capital to 14.1 kilometres. In contrast, the men’s C5 race, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday afternoon, is two laps of the same course which…

It wasn’t long ago that embarrassed Detroit Lions fans protected their identity by wearing paper bags over their heads while watching games at Ford Field. Their team was the butt of all jokes after a long line of abysmal seasons which included the wretched 2008 campaign when they failed to register a single win, going 0-16. Performances barely improved the following year when the toothless Lions celebrated just two victories and they won just three, five and three times again as 2019, 2020 and 2021 flops. The Lions haven’t played for the Vince Lombardi Trophy since the Super Bowl era…

Liverpool’s £12.5million signing of Federico Chiesa will prove to be the ‘signing of the transfer window’, Micah Richards believes. Arne Slot had a quiet first summer at Anfield, only signing two new players: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili who was immediately loaned back to Valencia and Chiesa. The versatile attacker arrives from Juventus in a deal worth £10m, plus £2.5m in add-ons, with a great reputation, having scored 34 goals and made 26 assists for the Italian giants over the last four years. He was also pivotal for Italy in their Euro 2020 triumph and was once valued at £100m. But given…

Raygun is adamant that she was Australia’s best female to represent her country at the Olympics but has apologised to the breakdancing community for her routines which went viral. Rachael Gunn, who competes under the name ‘Raygun’, scored zero in all three of her heats as breakdancing made its Olympic debut in Paris this summer. The 37-year-old created headlines around the world for her moves which included a kangaroo hop, a snake-like wriggle on the floor and the sprinkler. Questions had been raised over Gunn’s credentials but she claims that Australia needed ‘more resources’ in order to win an Olympic…

Martin Zubimendi has underlined his commitment to Real Sociedad after turning down a summer move to Liverpool, labelling the La Liga outfit – his boyhood club – his ‘life’. Liverpool appeared on the cusp of landing Zubimendi last month, only for the 25-year-old to stay on with Sociedad after being offered an improved contract in San Sebastian. The highly rated midfielder, who was a part of Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 squad, had also been on the radar of Arsenal, Barcelona and Bayern Munich throughout the summer. Liverpool scoured the market for possible alternatives after moving on from Zubimendi but the…

The Olympics is broadcast on the BBC, meanwhile, the Paralympics are shown on Channel 4 and viewers have defended this split. The Paris 2024 games got underway on July 26, and after ending on August 11, they will re-commence today, before running until September 8. Sports fans will have to switch over channels to continue catching the coverage, as since 2012, Channel 4 has been airing the Paralympics. One Reddit user, who uses the account name MyUnsername, voiced their frustration that it wasn’t also shown on BBC, like the Olympics counterpart. ‘Does it bother anyone else that Olympics are on…

Marco van Basten has criticised Donny van de Beek’s agent for allowing the midfielder to join Manchester United. Van de Beek made the move to United in a £39 million deal from Ajax in September 2020 but the 27-year-old failed to make an impact during his time at Old Trafford. The Dutch midfielder also had spells on loan at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt before United allowed him to join Spanish side Girona for an initial €500,000 (£423,000) fee this summer. ‘His manager was a bad advisor in that. That step was much too big,’ Van Basten said of Van de…

Sinner twice tested positive for clostebol, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass. But he was controversially cleared by a tribunal after they learned his physio applied spray to a cut on his hand before giving the player a bare-handed massage. This was said to have caused ‘contamination’. The Italian was automatically provisionally suspended, but his successful appeal allowed him to keep playing and move to the top…

It’s hardly all over bar the shouting but the job as England’s next permanent manager is surely Lee Carsley’s to lose. Success with the Three Lions at the European Under-21 Championship last year has led the Football Association to appoint him as interim boss for this month’s Nations League matches, starting with the trip to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland on Saturday and followed by the visit of Finland to Wembley on Tuesday. The FA say Carsley was appointed ‘with a view to remaining in the position throughout the autumn’ and there are potentially four more internationals, two…

Manuel Ugarte insists he is ready to come straight into the Manchester United first-team following the international break and deliver a much-needed boost in midfield. The Uruguay international completed his move from Paris Saint-Germain last week in a deal that could rise to £50.8million, becoming the club’s fifth signing of a busy summer transfer window. The midfielder did not arrive in time to be registered in time for Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool, however, introduced to the Old Trafford crowd ahead of kick-off. United’s shortcomings in midfield were woefully exposed that afternoon with Casemiro enduring a disastrous first-half, at fault for…
