FIA loses another senior figure as Mariani departs

FIA Faces Continued Turmoil as Senior Director Sara Mariani Departs

Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has made headlines once again as it announces the departure of another senior figure, Sara Mariani. The organisation’s Sustainability, Diversity, and Inclusion (D&I) director for the past 18 months, Mariani’s exit is part of broader changes within the FIA’s management structure.

    Mariani’s Unexpected Exit

Mariani shared her sentiments in a heartfelt note within her out-of-office email, expressing, "It is, sadly, time to say goodbye. I loved the ride, I enjoyed every minute of it." She highlighted the important work she carried out with her team and lamented the abruptness of her departure. "There is a life outside the FIA where talent and dedication are rewarded, and women in leadership positions can thrive," she added.

The FIA confirmed that Mariani’s role would be made redundant due to the restructuring of its sustainability and D&I functions, which will now operate as two separate divisions. The statement revealed that her last day would be on June 20, 2025, thanking her for her contributions since her appointment in December 2023.

    Management Shake-up at the FIA

The organisational changes reflect a strategic pivot at the FIA as it seeks to enhance its sustainability initiatives. The sustainability programme will now fall under Willem Groenewald, the secretary-general for mobility, while the D&I function will be overseen by senior human resources director Alessandra Malhame. This realignment aims to consolidate the FIA’s internal and external D&I efforts.

    Recent Departures Raise Concerns

Mariani’s departure comes on the heels of other significant resignations within the FIA, including former deputy president for sport Robert Reid back in April. The FIA has also seen the exits of key figures such as Paolo Basarri, the head of compliance, and Natalie Robyn, the former CEO. The race stewarding team has not been spared either, with significant departures including race director Niels Wittich.

As the FIA navigates this turbulent period, questions linger about the future direction of the organisation and how it aims to foster a more inclusive and sustainable environment in the world of motorsports.

    Conclusion

With a legacy of challenges and changes at the helm, the FIA faces a critical moment in its history. As it embarks on this new chapter marked by the resignations of experienced individuals, the organisation must now define a clear vision moving forward. Fans and stakeholders alike will be keen to see how these changes impact the racing world in the months to come.
