Arsene Wenger has revealed what he told Martin Odegaard after the win over West Ham and has compared him to one of his ex-Arsenal captains.
Wenger spent 22 years in charge Arsenal between 1996 and 2018 and returned to the club for the first time in over four years on Boxing Day.
Mikel Arteta was keen for the 73-year-old to return and he was given a joyous reception by Arsenal fans during the 3-1 victory over the Hammers.
Wenger was also pictured back in the home dressing room with Arsenal players and the club are now plotting to build a statue of him outside the Emirates to celebrate his achievements.
The Frenchman has now opened up about his recent trip to north London and his chat with current Gunners captain Odegaard.
Speaking to Norwegian outlet TV2, Wenger said: ‘It was difficult [trying to convince Odegaard to sign for Arsenal].
‘I talked to him when he was 15-years-old. I actually spoke with him about it after the game on Boxing Day.
‘I was desperate to sign him. Luckily he is here now. He is really like a young Cesc Fabregas. I think he has developed to become a complete player.
‘He is a calm player that analyses the game well. He has his feet well planted on the ground. I don’t want to say exactly what I talked about with Martin.
‘I am super impressed. He is really a down to earth and nice guy. The way he analyses the game.
‘He did that as well as a 15-year-old… the sharpness! I am really impressed. He will do well.
‘I was worried for Martin [at Real Madrid]. I thought he lost some of his creative attitude. The creativeness stagnated.
‘After he came to Arsenal he has regained his creativity. He plays fantastically well and masters every aspect of the game.
‘He is complete. I like him in every way in the game. Defensively and offensively.
‘He makes decisions quickly, and always optimally. It is remarkable! I like him, and the way he makes football look easy.
‘He has developed very well. It is really amazing. His decisions, and as well that he is a leader in the team.’
