Premier League leaders Arsenal are set to hold further talks over a January move for Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda, according to reports.
The Gunners are believed to be the favourites to land the 18-year-old’s signature despite interest from Newcastle United, who have now turned their attentions towards other transfer targets.
Ben White has been in impressive form but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his options at right-back with Cedric Soares rumoured to be heading to Fulham and Takehiro Tomiyasu plagued by injury problems this term.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Arsenal will hold more talks with Fresneda’s agent this week and could sign him for a bargain price of £8.8m due to a buy-out clause in his contract at Real Valladolid.
Fresneda, who has played 14 games for the La Liga club since making his debt last season, would likely become Arsenal’s third signing of the January transfer window as the look to strengthen their bid to win the Premier League title.
The Gunners have already brought Leandro Trossard to the Emirates in a £27m deal from Brighton.
The north London club are also expected to soon complete a deal for Poland international centre-back Jakub Kiwior from Italian side Spezia.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to Arsenal despite the Gunners being ready to trigger his €60m (£52.6m) release clause, according to reports in Spain.
Zubimendi signed a new contract with Real Sociedad last October which keeps him tied to the Spanish side until 2027.
The 23-year-old Spain international has also been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
