Anger in Paris after police kill teen who refused traffic stop
Mass unrest erupted in Paris overnight after police shot dead a 17-year-old who failed to stop when ordered to by traffic police.
Video online shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car before a gunshot is heard. The car then crashed to a stop.
The officer accused of shooting and killing the teen has been detained on homicide charges.
The teen has been named as Naël M. He died of bullet wounds to the chest.
There was a mass protest on Tuesday night in Nanterre, the area just west of Paris, where Naël M was killed.
At least 24 people have been arrested following the protests.
The shooting death of Naël M is now the second this year in France by a police officer during a traffic stop. In 2022, a record 13 people died this way.
French newspaper Le Monde says that initially, police tried to suggest the teen was driving his car towards them with the intention of hurting them. But footage posted online and verified by the AFP news agency tells a different story.
