AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli refused to comment on Fikayo Tomori’s red card against Chelsea but revealed that he ‘told the referee’ what he thought.
The defender was shown a red card after 18 minutes as he appeared to tug Mason Mount on the shoulder inside the box, with the Chelsea man staying on his feet.
Tomori and his AC Milan team-mates were stunned by German referee Daniel Siebert’s decision and circled him as they convinced the official to change his mind, but his call stood as he gave Chelsea a penalty.
Blues midfielder Jorginho slotted home the spot kick to put Graham Potter’s side 1-0 up at the San Siro and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the lead to secure all three points and to make it back-to-back wins over the Italians.
Speaking after the match, a clearly frustrated Pioli said: ‘I don’t want to review the episode, it seems too obvious.
‘I don’t want to comment. I told the referee what I think, I don’t speak not even so fluent English but I think he understood.’
Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, was adamant that Siebert did the right thing and that it was indeed a red card.
‘As a young defender you question how Tomori allowed himself to get into that situation,’ Ferdinand said on BT Sport.
‘Mount’s movement was great and it’s a foul anywhere in the pitch. The rule is the rule, it’s a red card.’
Jamie Carragher questioned the decision, but later deleted his post on Twitter about the incident.
‘The red card for Tomori feels harsh,’ he said. ‘But what happened to double jeopardy? Could it not just be a penalty and no red card [shrugging emoji].’
Tomori, who joined AC Milan from Chelsea just last year, had spoken in the build up to the match about how his side’s defeat to the Blues last week at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture had left him ‘angry’.
The 24-year-old England international centre-back was mocked on social media by some Chelsea fans following his first-half red card.
